Released in 1995 by Technics, the SL-1200LTD combined precision engineering with pure statement design, featuring gold-plated components, a deep piano black chassis and a distinctive smoked-gold lid.
In this video, MasterSounds founder Ryan Shaw explores the story behind the SL-1200LTD, its design details and the cultural moment that defined its release.
By 1995, UK club culture had moved firmly into licensed venues. As the the clubbing world was reshaped the landscape in 1994, underground raves gave way to fully realised nightclubs and the rise of the super club era. Production values increased. Budgets expanded. DJs became headline acts.
The SL-1200LTD arrived at precisely this moment, a turntable that reflected both the maturity and the excess of mid-1990s club culture.
With its 24k gold finish, piano black body and limited production numbers, the SL-1200LTD remains one of the most desirable Technics turntables ever made.
